I agree that ADHD should be out in the open. And people with ADHD are amazing and talented and…sometimes a total fucking mess. The choice to discuss ADHD with your employer is full of conflict. In great companies, it brings empathy, support and opportunity. In shitty companies it will bring about an HR nightmare of concern and protective action. “OMG, we have an employee who has something that might make it hard for us to fire him. They are a liability…document everything they do, so we can make a clear case for performance-based dismissal…” I’ve been down that road…
So, treat your ADHD disclosure carefully. If you can suggest that you have ADHD and therefore with the right support can accomplish great things, A,B, & C, then sing it loud and proud. If your ADHD is not a material issue to your job performance, and you don’t have trust in your company, then maybe keep it to yourself while you look for another job. You don’t want to work for a company that won’t go out of its way to create an environment of success for you.
