OK, OK, OK — Happy New Year.
2020 is the year that you will be kinder, fitter, wealthier, more charitable. Also, you will sleep better, drink more water, stop procrastinating, lose weight, do more “self-care”, meditate, journal, be present AND spend more quality time with your kids and loved ones. (By the way, that is a picture of my sons after they finished a 5K…that was a goal they wanted to accomplish this year…)
Now, I am NO self-help guru — I am probably a bigger mess than you are in a lot of ways. But there are a couple of things that I have learned, and they manifest themselves in #growingyourbusiness, too.
- Willpower won’t do it. Being resolute in your statement of “I am going to do X” is a kind of self-delusion. Unless is backed up by a plan, however unrealistic, it is just a bit of self-calming. (If you want to know how to delude yourself in a positive way, check out Larry Kim’s Inc Magazine missive.)
- There are only 2 kinds of goals — push and pull. They are different. A push goal means that you will push through anything to avoid a consequence. A pull goal is the ability to do something when the goal is reached.
- Push goals are short term term thinking like, “We need to grow revenue by 18% to make sure that we never miss payroll ever again.” You can probably walk through fire for that goal because it avoids pain as long as the pain of getting to your goal…
